Editorial work always comes with its unique set of challenges, and that’s why I love it so, so much. Having your mettle tested in the field is either educational or satisfying…and very often both. Having been commissioned to photograph images of the owners of and current exhibits on display at Harvester Arts, I came prepared for every eventuality.
This Friday, September 29 from 6-9 p.m., my personal project “Shapes” will be shown at Vanya Designs at 520 S. Commerce!
I’ve been working on this project since 2012 and have created 5846 images for it in the process. It’s evolved over these past 5 years, sometimes slowly, and sometimes all at once. Building a portfolio for a new model is an exciting job. It’s a day full of playing different roles to explore several sides of someone who has never been in front of a camera before, and it’s a great way to assess a model’s natural ability and her ability to take direction.
Michael grew up out past the suburbs of Wichita. Out where pastures and houses start to intermingle and you’re almost as likely to meet a combine on the road as you are another driver. It was just up “the hill” (a steep one, by Kansas estimates) about half a mile from where I grew up.
Now, two decades and a few scenery changes later, he works two blocks away from my studio in the sprawling metropolis that is downtown Wichita. I pass him in the crosswalks from time to time as we make our ways around between parking and work.
